Along with a few blogger pals of mine, we’ve embarked on an exciting endeavor to spotlight affordable attractions across various cities. In our series titled “Affordable activities in…,” we each dive into our cherished cities or hometowns and share the pocket-friendly activities available.

For my contribution, I’m going to give you an inside look into Minneapolis, Minnesota, my beloved hometown.

Discover Minneapolis on a Budget
Everyone contributing to this series will discuss budget-friendly options in their respective hometowns. Once you’ve explored my Minneapolis recommendations, don’t forget to hop onto the other articles in the series (you’ll find links at the end) to uncover more cities without burning a hole in your pocket.

Now, let’s dive into Minneapolis!

Minneapolis: Where Warm Hearts Defy Cold Weather
With a population hovering around 437,069, Minneapolis is Minnesota’s crown jewel.

Ever wondered about the origins of the name “Minneapolis”? It’s an intriguing blend of the Dakota word “minne” and the Ancient Greek “polis,” translating to “The City of Lakes.” And rightfully so, given its 22 pristine lakes.

My heart belongs to Minneapolis. The majority of my life’s memories are rooted here, and I genuinely believe it’s an enchanting place, whether you’re settling down or just dropping by. The city is bursting with activities.

From soaking in nature at our numerous parks to catching a Broadway spectacle downtown, Minneapolis offers a medley of experiences. Foodies, party animals, and cultural enthusiasts alike will find something to relish. A trip to Minneapolis is a guaranteed delight.

Curious about exploring Minneapolis without stretching your wallet too thin? Read on for my tried-and-tested recommendations, covering both Minneapolis and sometimes its twin, St. Paul. (And just a note – all photos here are clicked by yours truly!)

Reaching Minneapolis
Minneapolis is accessible by air via the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), situated within a short 10-mile radius from both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul.

MSP, being the busiest in the Upper Midwest region, also serves as a key Delta Air Lines hub and the main base for Sun Country Airlines. Therefore, flight options are abundant.

For bargain deals on flights, consider browsing Expedia or Hotwire.

Getting Around in Minneapolis
The city boasts an efficient public transit system to ease your travels. If you’re landing at the Minneapolis St. Paul International airport, consider hopping on the light rail transit to downtown.

This rail system, a fairly recent addition, offers a cost-effective transit solution. Fare rates fluctuate between $1.50 and $2.75 for express rides.

Key landmarks along the light rail include the Mall of America, Minnehaha Falls, and downtown attractions like the U.S. Bank Stadium and Target Field.

Frequent buses serve Minneapolis, ensuring you’re never left stranded. If your itinerary involves exploring the broader Twin Cities region, consider renting a vehicle via platforms like Hotwire or Priceline.

Ridesharing platforms, Uber and Lyft, are also active in the area. For cycling enthusiasts, the local bike-sharing initiative, Nice Ride Minnesota, offers over 1,500 bikes, accessible with a $6 day pass.

Accommodations in Minneapolis
Minneapolis has no shortage of lodging options. Downtown hotels place you right in the heart of the action.

For those prioritizing proximity to the airport and light rail, new hotels near the Mall of America might be appealing.

My personal preference leans towards Airbnb in quaint residential areas, especially around the Minneapolis lakes.

Embrace Nature in Minneapolis
Dubbed the city of lakes, Minneapolis has 22 lakes to justify this title. Be it picnicking, canoeing, or sunbathing, these lakes promise a refreshing day out.

Some of my top nature spots include:

  • Lake Bde Maka Ska: Perfect for sunbathing, canoeing, beach volleyball, and scenic walks. (FREE)
  • Minnehaha Falls: A photogenic waterfall with an adjoining park. (FREE)
  • Minnesota Landscape Arboretum: Located a bit outside of Minneapolis, this 1,047-acre garden and arboretum is a visual treat.
  • Lyndale Park Rose Gardens and Peace Garden: A serene duo offering both a Rose Garden and an Asian-inspired Peace Garden. (FREE)

Spotlight on Minneapolis Attractions
From shopping to theatre, there’s no shortage of attractions.

  • Mall of America: This iconic shopping destination also hosts an indoor theme park.
  • Minnesota State Fair: A bustling annual affair attracting millions.
  • Guthrie Theater: Experience Broadway in Minneapolis.
  • Como Zoo: A free zoo boasting diverse wildlife. (FREE, donations welcome)

Museums Galore
Minneapolis is a hub for culture and history:

  • Mill City Museum: Delve into Minneapolis’s flour-dominated past. ($10 adults, $5 children)
  • Science Museum of Minnesota: Worth every penny for science enthusiasts. ($16 adults, $13 children)
